Chasing Big Dreams Without Sacrificing Education: Linda´s GWUOHS Success Story

What if students didn’t have to choose between pursuing elite athletics and receiving a strong, full-time education? For Linda, an eighth-grade student at The George Washington University Online School (GWUOHS), that balance is not only possible, it’s happening and she’s thriving.
Linda is a rhythmic gymnast based in Massachusetts who trains up to 30 hours a week and competes nationally and internationally as a member of the Brazilian National Team. Thanks to the flexibility, support, and structure of GWUOHS, Linda can fully commit to her athletic goals while staying on track academically.
Meet Linda: Student, Athlete, and Dream-Chaser
At just 14 years old, Linda has already accomplished what many athletes only dream of. Living near Boston with her family, Linda has been practicing rhythmic gymnastics for nine years. Her dedication recently earned her a spot on the Brazilian National Team, one of her proudest achievements.
“I think that’s one of my biggest accomplishments, because I’ve always wanted to be on the national team, and I worked really hard in the past few years to get there,” Linda told us.
Despite a demanding training schedule and frequent travel, Linda remains a full-time student at GWUOHS, where she continues to excel academically.
“I really like how the school has structure, but it’s also flexible at the same time. I also really like the live classes. I travel a lot and with GWUOHS I can still do work while I’m traveling, like get ahead or catch up. I really like my teachers. I think they’re all sweet and really nice. And whenever I ask them questions, they always give good feedback,” said Linda.

What Is Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Rhythmic gymnastics is a unique sport that blends athletics and artistry. Athletes perform choreographed routines using apparatus such as ribbon and ball, combining balance, flexibility, coordination, and expression.
Although the sport is still growing in popularity in the United States, it demands a high level of commitment, especially for athletes like Linda who compete internationally. This makes flexibility in education essential.
Balancing Elite Training and Full-time School
Traditional school schedules often leave little room for student athletes who train for hours each day or travel for competitions. Between extensive training weeks, international travel, and recovery time, student athletes require an academic model that adapts to their lifestyle.
GWUOHS provides that solution.
Linda’s mom, Krishna shared, “I found [GWUOHS] through Google. What impressed me the most was the combination of live classes and flexible schedule. The professionalism is something that also stood out to me from the very first meeting. It aligned with what we were looking for.”
How GWUOHS Makes It All Possible
One of the biggest benefits Linda highlights is the flexibility paired with strong academic structure.
She participates in live online classes while also having the ability to work ahead or catch up on assignments when her gymnastics schedule demands it. Whether she’s traveling for competitions or training both in the U.S. and Brazil, Linda can stay connected to her education.
Linda also points to her teachers as a key part of her success. She describes them as kind, approachable, and highly responsive, always offering thoughtful feedback and support when she has questions.
Support Beyond the Classroom
For Linda and her family, the support system at GWUOHS has been essential, especially during the onboarding process.
Learning a new platform, mastering time management, and balancing school with athletics can feel overwhelming at first. Linda’s advisor played a crucial role in guiding both Linda and her family through the transition.
“Linda’s advisor is extremely supportive. We talk to her once a week to align and to ask questions,” Krishna shared.
Academic Growth Alongside Athletic Excellence
Looking ahead, Linda and her family are already planning for the future.
Krishna told us that they, “made a plan for the next semester to focus more on honor classes that will help her prepare better for college.”
While she is still exploring her long-term path, Linda is interested in pursuing a career in medicine, proof that her academic aspirations are just as ambitious as her athletic goals.

Life Beyond School and Gym
When Linda isn’t training or attending class, she enjoys spending time with her family and traveling, especially to Brazil, where much of her extended family lives.
She also has a creative side and recently began taking local ceramics and art classes, adding balance and joy to her busy schedule.
Advice for Families Considering Online School
Linda’s family emphasizes the importance of building a strong relationship with an advisor. Clear communication, time management, and staying engaged with teachers are key to success.
They also note that while it takes time to adjust to any new school environment, the GWUOHS platform is user-friendly, and the support makes the experience positive and manageable.
“I really like my advisor, Mrs. Giraldo. She gives me a lot of valuable direction on how to organize my assignments and stay on track,” said Linda.

Linda’s journey highlights what’s possible when education adapts to students’ lives, not the other way around. GWUOHS and K12-powered schools empower students to pursue passions, travel the world, and reach elite levels of achievement without sacrificing academic success.
