How GWUOHS Helped Amelia Achieve Athletic Success While Enjoying a Student Experience
For student-athletes, finding a balance between training and schoolwork is crucial. For Amelia, (Class of 2026), choosing George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS) was the perfect decision to achieve academic success while pursuing her ballet career.
After taking her first dance class at just four years old, Amelia was a prodigy in ballet. At nine, she received a scholarship to the world-class San Francisco Ballet School, starting her pre-professional dance career.
She is now training at John Cranko Schule in Germany, one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the world, a testament to hard work and believing in herself.
As her dance career was starting to take shape, Amelia was in her freshman year of high school and wanted to find a school that would allow her time to train during the day instead of just after school hours.
“I looked into online school programs and George Washington really stood out to me because it had a lot of support around it and offered a flexible schedule that you could accommodate your life with. So I tried it out and I really liked it. I was able to dance more in the day while also keeping up with my studies, which is exactly what I wanted,” explained Amelia.
She also loved the student experience at GWUOHS, from hopping onto the K12 Zone and meeting new friends to selecting electives that allowed her to dive deeper into her other interests.
“I also joined the Meditation club, and meditating is something that I like to do in my free time. It was really nice to start the morning off with other people and have a calm start to the day,” Amelia added. Experiences like these helped Amelia build meaningful connections with peers despite learning in an online environment.
After having graduated from GWUOHS in May 2026, Amelia is setting her sights on the future of her dance career. Mainly, she hopes to earn a professional contract with Stuttgart, John Cranko Schule’s company, an achievement that she’s already making progress towards.
“Sometimes the company invites students to dance with the company members. I had the chance to dance in the Sleeping Beauty and it was so magical. Stuttgart is going on tour to Australia and I was invited to perform. So, I’m going to Australia in October with the company which I am very excited about,” shared Amelia.
