From the Galápagos to Graduation: How GWUOHS Empowered This Student to Chase Her Dreams

For GWUOHS senior Layah, high school wasn’t just about academics—it was an adventure across continents, cultures, and personal growth.
“GWUOHS has given me an incredible level of flexibility that made my entire high school journey possible,” Layah shared. “The ability to truly work from anywhere in the world allowed me to live and learn in extraordinary places.”
That’s no exaggeration. During her junior year, Layah immersed herself in Spanish language and culture while living in Spain and Costa Rica. As a senior, she took her passion for learning even further, moving to the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador to work as a conservationist.
Over the past three years, Layah has not only become fluent in Spanish, but she’s also developed a deep love for conservation, taken on teaching roles, and, most importantly, become the best version of herself. “I’ve built lifelong friendships with peers from around the world and gained knowledge and experiences that have truly shaped who I am today,” she said.
Next up: Layah is heading to the University of Colorado Boulder, where she will major in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Her sights are set on medical school and an ambitious, inspiring goal—becoming a neurosurgeon.
“Throughout my time at GWUOHS, I’ve been supported and encouraged in every way possible,” Layah said. “This experience has helped me believe that anything is achievable with passion, dedication, and hard work.”
Layah’s advisor, Darys Nieves, reflected on her impact: “It has been an honor to witness Layah’s journey at GWUOHS. Her kindness and joyful personality shine through in every interaction you have with her. I admire her determination to accomplish anything she sets her mind to. I can’t believe she is already graduating this year! We will truly miss her!”
Congratulations, Layah! We can’t wait to see where your next adventure leads.
