Senior Spotlight: GWUOHS Student Emma Finds Balance, Belonging, and Academic Rigor

  • 05/23/2025

For Emma B., senior year at George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS) is not just a milestone—it’s a celebration of personal growth, academic excellence, and meaningful community connections.

“Attending GWUOHS has allowed me to balance both athletics and academics in my life,” Emma said. “The teachers and advisors are wonderful and always provide support when needed. Classes are flexible, while still being academically challenging and fulfilling.”

Emma joined GWUOHS in 2022, transitioning from a traditional public high school. Like many new students, she initially worried about adapting to an online format. But she quickly found her footing, thanks to the school’s mentorship program, vibrant student clubs, and inclusive learning environment.

“There has been no shortage of friends at GWUOHS,” she shared. “And as a senior, I am really going to miss it when I head off to college.”

From Uncertainty to Confidence: Thriving in the GWUOHS Community

Emma’s transition to GWUOHS was eased by the school’s intentional support systems and opportunities for student involvement. The mentorship program helped her feel welcomed and guided during her first year, while extracurriculars and academic clubs allowed her to build friendships and expand her interests beyond the virtual classroom.

“Coming from a public high school, I was nervous about the shift,” Emma said. “But GWUOHS made it easy to adjust. I found my community here.”

A Model of Perseverance and Positivity

Emma’s academic advisor, Chelsea Crawford, described her as a standout member of the GWUOHS student body.

“Emma not only excels academically but also contributes meaningfully to our school community,” said Crawford. “She’s consistently engaged with both peers and teachers in thoughtful and positive ways. Her commitment, perseverance, and willingness to work with others have made her an integral part of our school.”

Emma’s story reflects the values GWUOHS strives to cultivate in every student: resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of self-direction.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future at UVA

After graduation, Emma will be attending the University of Virginia (UVA), where she plans to continue pursuing her academic and athletic goals.

“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at GWUOHS,” Emma said. “It’s prepared me not only for college, but for life.”
