National Merit Scholarship: GWUOHS Student, Bobby M. Named Semifinalst

George Washington University Online High School (GWUOHS) student Bobby M. was recently named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, one of about 16,000 high school students annually. To become a Semifinalist, the student must score in their state’s top 1% of PSAT test-takers. This recognition marks a significant milestone, as Bobby is the first student from GWUOHS to receive this prestigious honor.

A Proud Moment for Student and School

Upon receiving the news, Bobby expressed a mix of excitement and humility. “Everyone’s been very excited, which is flattering, to be honest,” he shared. The recognition came first through a letter to his family, who were “very proud, very happy – maybe more excited than I was, to be honest.”

The GWUOHS community rallied around Bobby’s achievement, with staff and fellow students offering congratulations. As the first GWUOHS student to receive this award, Bobby’s success reflects positively on the school’s commitment to academic excellence.

The GW Online Advantage for a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

Bobby credits GWUOHS’s emphasis on college and career readiness as a key factor in his success. “I think GWUOHS has helped me in a lot of ways,” he explained. “Their emphasis on college and career readiness has really helped me prepare for a test like the PSAT, because that sort of test is closely associated with college readiness.”

The virtual learning environment at GWUOHS also plays a crucial role in Bobby’s academic growth. He appreciates the ability to work independently, which allows him to “focus on the task at hand and really get a deeper understanding of the work.” This self-paced approach, combined with readily available teacher support enables Bobby to excel in his studies.

Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars

As a competitive tennis player, Bobby trains many hours each week. The flexibility offered by GWUOHS’s online format is instrumental in helping him balance his athletic pursuits with his academic responsibilities. “GWUOHS offers me a lot of flexibility where it can really help me allocate certain time to schoolwork,” Bobby noted. This adaptability allows him to “be a competitive athlete while still not really missing out on anything on the academic side.”

Overcoming Challenges and Growing as a Student

Like any high school student, Bobby faces academic challenges, particularly as he’s progressed into more challenging courses. However, he’s found the support system at GW invaluable in overcoming these hurdles. “I’ve always had the support from teachers that I need to sort of overcome those [challenges],” he said.

The unique virtual school environment has also fostered a supportive peer community. Bobby highlighted the importance of clubs in connecting with fellow students who share similar interests and can offer both academic and social support.

Looking Ahead: Beyond the National Merit Scholarship Decree

As Bobby continues his academic journey and prepares for college applications, his achievement as a Semifinalist opens new doors of opportunity. His success story serves as an inspiration to other online high school students and a testament to the quality of education provided by George Washington University Online High School.

GWUOHS’s commitment to college and career readiness, combined with its flexible virtual learning environment, has proven to be a winning formula for academic achievement. As Bobby put it, “I’ve had a very good experience at GWUOHS that, you know, it’s definitely helped me with my college and career readiness, and it’s helped me achieve the National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist recognition.”
